Why BFCM campaigns need their own goal

Many brands keep their evergreen campaigns running through BFCM. A total sales goal for the whole store counts sales from those campaigns too.

ThoughtMetric lets you filter the goal to your BFCM campaigns, so sales from evergreen campaigns aren’t included.

How to set up the goal
  1. Open the Custom Report you're using for BFCM and add a widget
  2. Select the goal widget
  3. Choose total sales as the metric
  4. Add a campaign name filter and select your BFCM campaigns
  5. Set your target value and the date range for the promotion
  6. Click "Save Widget"

The date range should match when your BFCM campaigns run. If early access campaigns start the week before Black Friday, start the goal on that day so those sales count toward the target.

Clear campaign names help here. Using the same label, like "BFCM 2026," in campaign names on every ad platform makes the right campaigns quicker to find when you set the filter in ThoughtMetric.

Add a second goal for new customers

The same filter works with new customer sales. Add another goal widget, choose new customer sales as the metric, and apply the same campaign name filter.

Track ROAS and MER with a gauge widget

For ROAS and MER, use the gauge widget instead of a goal.

Using the goal for your BFCM recap

During the promotion, you can check the widget at any point to see how close the BFCM campaigns are to the target. It’s also a quick way to show leadership how the promo is performing. Once the promotion ends, you can bring the same Custom Report into the BFCM recap with leadership.

Get started

Once BFCM is over, you can update the goals with December date ranges and keep using the same report through the holidays.

FAQs

What metrics can the goal widget track?
The goal widget tracks total sales, number of orders, new customer sales, add to carts, sessions, and more. ROAS and MER work better in a gauge widget.

Can I filter a goal to specific campaigns?
Yes. Add a campaign name filter when you set up the goal, and it will only count sales from those campaigns. You can also filter by country, SKU, product category, and more.

Can I have more than one goal in a Custom Report?
Yes. You can add a separate goal widget for each target, such as one for total sales from BFCM campaigns and another for new customer sales.

When should a BFCM goal start?
Start the goal on the first day your BFCM campaigns run. If you have early access campaigns before Black Friday, include those days so their sales count toward the target.

What happens when the goal’s date range ends?
The widget marks the goal as completed and stops tracking. The final number stays on screen next to the target.

Which e-commerce platforms does ThoughtMetric work with?
ThoughtMetric works with Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Magento, and custom stores.
